When You’re Just not Feelin’ the Resolution

Finding Hope in the New Year when you're just not feelin' the resolution.Have you ever wanted to just give up before you even started on something?

I have to admit, I’m not a champion in the area of follow through. I usually can come up with some great ideas though! And sometimes have the momentum and willpower to go a ways with them or *gasp*…maybe even finish.

I think setting goals and coming up with resolutions are wonderful things, but this week as so many others are throwing around thoughts, visions and ideas for the New Year, I’m having a hard time grabbing onto the enthusiasm and running with it.

I’m weary and worn out and honestly can’t imagine having a resolution past getting all my Christmas decorations put away. And even that can’t really be a resolution for me, because when I looked it up, the exact definition of resolution is- a firm decision to do or not to do something. So, there goes that one!

Recently, I came across a poem and this part stood out to me…

Coward and wayward and weak,
I change with the changing sky;
Today so eager and bright,
Tomorrow too weak to try;
But He never gives in,
So we two shall win, Jesus and I.  ~Author Unknown~

So very true for me. This resonates with my spirit, and so many times I feel like this. I often wonder how one person can be so different from one day to the next. One day I have excitement, ideas, and energy. My whole life is about to change because of these ideas. I am absolutely sure of it every time.

The next day….I am going to die. How can anyone be expected to accomplish all of these things? The. Very. Next. Day. Or maybe a week if I’m lucky and it’s warm and sunny outside. Definitely the next day if it’s winter though.

As I sit and wonder what God thinks about all this, and if it’s even worth thinking of a resolution this year or throughout the coming years, I go back to these lines in the poem:

But He never gives in,

So we too shall win

Jesus and I

And I’m reminded of His mercy and his grace:

Lamentations 3:22-23- The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Psalm 103:8- The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

And I’m reminded of His promises to help me:

Isaiah 41:13- For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, “Do not fear; I will help you.

Matthew 11:28- “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

And I’m reminded that my strength comes from hope in Him and in His truth:

Psalm 29:11- The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace.

Lamentations 3:24- “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.”

Isaiah 40:31- but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

And I’m realizing as I write, that these truths and promises are where I want my resolutions to be coming from. No matter what dreams, goals, or crazy ideas I have this year…through the hard, tear streaming days, and the sweet relaxing ones, these are the truths I want to stand firm on:

God is faithful and compassionate. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. He is slow to anger and full of love. His mercies are new every morning. He will take me by the hand and help me. He will give me peace and rest.

Coward and wayward and weak; I change with the changing sky....so we too shall win Jesus and II may give up….

But he never gives in

So we two shall win

Jesus and I

Hebrews 4:16-  Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

So now I find my spirit more at peace, and my hope growing again for the year ahead….no matter when I get my decorations put away;)

We sang this song at church this weekend, and it was such a sweet reminder for my soul. Here are the words that struck me, but you can listen to it for yourself below as well. I pray you have a wonderful year ahead friends, and that we can encourage one another in His truth as we go.

10,000 Reasons by Matt Redman

The sun comes up
It’s a new day dawning
It’s time to sing Your song again
Whatever may pass
And whatever lies before me
Let me be singing
When the evening comes
Bless the Lord oh my soul
Oh my soul
Worship His Holy name
Sing like never before
Oh my soul
I’ll worship Your Holy name
You’re rich in love
And You’re slow to anger
Your name is great
And Your heart is kind
For all Your goodness
I will keep on singing
Ten thousand reasons
For my heart to find

  1. Oh my gosh, you had me cracking up and nodding emphatically in agreement with this post! YES, resolutions felt exhausting before I even wrote them down! That is one of my favorite songs and those are just the lyrics my heart needs to dwell on tonight. Happy New Year to you (resolutions or not)!
