Right In the Thick of It

thick-of-itEach night before bed, we like to pray as a family and encourage our kids to start out with some things they are thankful for. Every single night our six year old begins the same way…”God thank you for God, Jesus, Holy Spirit, angels, weapons, axes, pickaxes, and swords…” and then he continues on with any other prayers he has for the day.

I love this prayer of his and his little warrior heart, and am realizing lately just how much I have to learn from him.

Right now I’m going through Priscilla Shirer’s bible study The Armor of God for the second time. It is such a powerful study and I want to continue to learn how to armor up against the enemy in my everyday life.

Ephesians 6:11-12  Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

There are battles going on all around us everyday in the heavenly realms. And our enemy Satan does not want us to accomplish the good things God has planned for us, does not want us to experience the peace, blessings and inheritance we already have or can have as believers in Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 5:8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

And this week, I’ve really been feeling the full weight of this battle in my mind, heart and spirit. Maybe you have too? Our enemy is real and he is working hard to distract us from the truth and promises of God. Our enemy wants us to be so wrapped up in what is going on around us, that like a dog chasing its tail in circles, we forget to look up to the One who arms us for this battle.

Priscilla Shirer says, “Sometimes the greatest miracles God does are not in our circumstances, it’s in our own minds.”

As I sat the other morning with the Lord wondering what was going on with me and asking for help sorting it out, God brought this song to my mind:

“Always” by Kristian Stanfill

My foes are many, they rise against me
But I will hold my ground
I will not fear the war, I will not fear the storm
My help is on the way, my help is on the way

Oh, my God, He will not delay
My refuge and strength always
I will not fear, His promise is true
My God will come through always, always

Troubles surround me, chaos abounding
My soul will rest in You
I will not fear the war, I will not fear the storm
My help is on the way, my help is on the way

Oh, my God, He will not delay
My refuge and strength always
I will not fear, His promise is true
My God will come through always, always

I lift my eyes up, my help comes from the Lord
I lift my eyes up, my help comes from the Lord
I lift my eyes up, my help comes from the Lord
I lift my eyes up, my help comes from the Lord

Father God, thank you for this beautiful reminder to look up to You….the One who is fighting for me. You want that for all of us Lord. Thank you that if we will only ask, you will arm us with the most powerful armor there is. Yours. Your promises are true, my God will come through always. Always.

Hebrews 12:2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Psalm 141:1 Blessed be the Lord, my rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle…

Exodus 14:13-14 “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today….14 The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Jeremiah 19:11-13 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
