What’s the Point of it All?

whats-the-point Some nights, even though I’m exhausted, I stay up too late because the kids are finally in bed and I can do whatever I want to do. Because I know that as soon as I go to bed, I have to get up tomorrow and do so many of the same things over, only to watch them come undone and then do them over again. You know what I mean?

And I truly love being at home with my kids…I really do, but we all have things in our lives we’d rather not have to spend our time on again and again. Laundry, dishes, food….food, dishes, laundry. Or yardwork, home repairs, or whatever it is in your life that you don’t want to have to do all over again and again. Right?

So when I sit down at night, I just want to eat some chips and cheese okay? Ha! And watch something on TV to unwind. Or have a glass of wine and read a lovely book. And these are all so wonderful, but time goes by fast and they never ultimately fulfill what my heart, mind, and soul really want.

For the past several weeks our pastor has been going over the book of Ecclesiastes in church. This last week was on The Pursuit of Pleasure, and I believe it is one of the most powerful messages I have ever heard. So I wanted to pass along some things that really struck me.

Ecclesiastes 2:1-3 I said to myself, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure to find out what is good.” But that also proved to be meaningless. “Laughter,” I said, “is madness. And what does pleasure accomplish?” I tried cheering myself with wine, and embracing folly—my mind still guiding me with wisdom. I wanted to see what was good for people to do under the heavens during the few days of their lives.

One of his points was that so many times in our lives we’re told not to pursue pleasure in things like sex, food, wine, etc. because they don’t really satisfy us or are not really pleasurable. Maybe when we’re young we’re told they’re not even that fun. But that’s not true. They are fun. And sometimes they do seem to satisfy us….at least for a bit. But they can never bring true meaning or satisfy our souls.

The Lord doesn’t want us to stop taking pleasure in the things he has created, but he wants us to see that these things are nothing compared to the pleasure that we find in Jesus Christ.

Here are a few words from our pastor , Dr. Wes Feltner:

“In this life, the party will come to an end. In the kingdom of God, the party and the pleasure never end! We are created for pleasure in Jesus Christ.”

“Feast yourself and delight yourself in the One where pleasure began and keeps getting better for all eternity.”

“Sex, wine, music, laughter fall short of the glory of God. But when you find your delight in the glory of God, then you can delight in pleasure to the glory of God.”

1 Corinthians 10:31- So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

I love thinking about this. It’s so true. My soul longs to take delight and pleasure in the One who created delight and pleasure! He wants us to experience what these are to the fullest in Him. In relationship with Him. In eternity with Him. If we can take pleasure in such small things that don’t even last, how much more can we take pleasure in the creator of all things? Music, laughter, the ocean, the mountains, the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets we can possibly imagine.

As I think on these things, this song keeps coming to my mind and captures my feelings so beautifully:

I’m Overwhelmed by Big Daddy Weave

I see the work of Your Hands
Galaxies spin in a Heavenly dance oh God
All that You are is so overwhelming

I hear the sound of Your Voice
All at once it’s a gentle and thundering noise oh God
All that You are is so overwhelming

I delight myself in You
Captivated by Your beauty
I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by You

God, I run into Your arms
Unashamed because of mercy
I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by You

I know the power of Your Cross
Forgiven and free forever You’ll be my God
And all that You’ve done is so overwhelming

I delight myself in You
In the Glory of Your Presence
I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by You

And God I run into Your arms
Unashamed because of mercy
I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by You

You are Beautiful, You are Beautiful
Oh God, there is no one more Beautiful
You are Beautiful, God you are the most Beautiful

Heavenly Father, thank you that you are the ultimate creator. Thank you that I can come to you in worship at church or on my couch in pj’s with chips and cheese:) You delight in us, and have blessed us with things to enjoy. Help me to take pleasure in being with you no matter where I’m going or what I’m doing today. Help me to live my life all to your glory Lord. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Isaiah 61:10 I am overwhelmed with joy in the LORD my God! For he has dressed me with the clothing of salvation and draped me in a robe of righteousness. I am like a bridegroom in his wedding suit or a bride with her jewels.

Here is the link to the message too…give it a listen, you’ll be so glad you did:
